A Hero for the World

Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela

He was a great man, one of the greatest of the century. Not perfect, but always striving for perfection. We need to read him, study him, emulate him. This book is a great start.

Sherlock Holmes = The Golden Years

Sherlock Holmes = The Golden Years - Kim H. Krisco I must confess that this book was my first soiree into Sherlock Holmes, and an enjoyable one. The stories are cleverly interwoven deal with more than simply crime sleuthing. Here the reader will find a love story that goes beyond the grave. The book also explores the historical, political and cultural background of eugenics, Darwinism and suffragettes, all marching against the drumbeat of an approaching WW11.

A Meeting of Clans

A Meeting of Clans - Kathleen Flanagan Rollins A Meeting of Clans from the Misfits and Heroes series grabs the reader from the first page and doesn't let go until the last one. The book follows two clans during the ice age as they struggle to survive mastodons and other hazards of the rain forest, enemy tribes and strife within their own communities. When the tribes meet, the characters’ reactions are varied and display a deep understanding of human nature.
Rollins’s rich imagination renders spirit and myth as tangible as a cross, prayer beads or other holy relic. Here is the creation myth, the flood myth and so many others woven naturally into the characters’ lives, allowing us to see our own world with fresh eyes, all while we are being thoroughly entertained. This book is a treat. I highly recommend it.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel - Rachel Joyce A good heartwarming read without being sentimental.

Memory Wall

Memory Wall - Anthony Doerr Doerr is a poetic storytelling genius.

The Underside of Joy

The Underside of Joy - Sere Prince Halverson I just read an ARC (advanced reader's copy) of this book and loved every moment.
When Ella loses her husband she assumes she'll raise the step-children she loves as her own. Then their 'real' mother shows up to claim them and so begins a tug of war between two women for custody of the children they both love. Just as in real life, there are no easy answers and therein lies the beauty of the book. But it is easy to fall in love with the characters. The setting will also draw you in; northern California charms even as its 'underside' is revealed. Read this book and be prepared for a journey into the lives of characters you'll root for, laugh and cry with, and finally, carry with you long after you close the book.
